Ranthambore National Park India

The former hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur, the Ranthambore National Park is situated in Eastern Rajasthan at the confluence of the Aravali hill ranges and the Vindhyan plateau. Two rivers flow through the Ranthambore National Park - the Chambal River in the South and the Banas River in the North. Six man-made lakes and many perennial streams pass through the entire national park. In 1955, the Ranthambore National Park was declared a game sanctuary; and in 1980, it attained the status of a national park. With the initiation of Project Tiger in 1972, it was declared as a tiger reserve in India. The total area of the Ranthambore National Park is 1,334 sq km along with its adjoining sanctuaries - the Kaila Devi Sanctuary and the Mansingh Sanctuary. The typical feature of the park is that out of the entire park some areas are open for the tourists to wander in and explore the flora and fauna of the park. The Ranthambore National Park is nestled between the Aravali and Vindhya mountain ranges. The rugged terrain and the dense deciduous forests are major features of this national park, which has among the the largest and most diverse collection of wildlife species in India.

Ranthambore is also categorised as a heritage site because of the picturesque ruins of the fort that dot the park. The lake palaces, 'chhatris', old fortifications and a majestic fort dating back to 1,000 years overlook the park. The Jogi Mahal and the Padam Talao are the unique features of Ranthambore National Park. The park is famous for the majestic Royal Bengal Tigers, which can be seen around the lakes and watering holes, prowling through the forest or resting on the ruins of the fort. Ranthambore National Park is one of the best sanctuaries to see tigers in their wild habitat in India. Many dignitaries have visited Ranthambore National Park to see its majestic tigers. President Bill Clinton of the United States came to Ranthambore National Park on his visit to India and expressed his delight at seeing the tigers of Ranthambore

. Tigers in Ranthambore National Park

There are about 36 tigers and 40 leopards in the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve. Observing the activities of this mighty and powerful creature is a lifetime experience. Tigers can be spotted easily in their natural habitat during daytime particularly at the confluence of three lakes-Padam Talab, Raj Bagh Talab and Milak Talab. The park also has a large number of panthers seen in plenty after the tigers at Kachida Valley and commonly seen at the outskirts of the park.

Special Attractions in Ranthambore National Park

The national park is dotted with ancient Banyan Trees, Dhok and Pipal trees, mango trees and the green belts covered by the trees. The Ranthambore Wildlife Sanctuary has the two extremes - forests and open bush land. The dry and deciduous forests are dominated with the Dhok trees.

Ranthambore Fort and Jogi Mahal : With an area of 392-sq-kms, this park was named after the Ranthambhore Fort that occupies the principal position in the centre of the national park. This 10th century fort built by the Chauhans, is probably the oldest existing fort in Rajasthan and particularly in the Malwa plateau. The forest rest house, Jogi Mahal houses the second-largest Banyan tree in India.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Set high in the ranges of the Western Ghats, in God's Own Country, Kerala, is the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. Periyar wildlife sanctuary has a picturesque lake at the heart of the sanctuary. Formed with the building of a dam in 1895, this reservoir meanders around the contours of the wooded hills, providing a permanent source of water for the local wildlife. Though its a Tiger Reserve, tourists come here to view the Indian elephants in the act of ablution and playfulness by the Periyar lake.

Major Wildlife Attractions in Periyar National Park

Apart from the elephants the other animals to be seen in the Periyar sanctuary are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog and very rarely, a Tiger. There are, now, an estimated 40 tigers here. Four species of primates are found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. Periyar also happens to be the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, which is rarely to be seen.

The birdlife comprises of Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. The reptilian population boasts Of Monitor Lizards that can be spotted basking in the sun, on the rocks along the lakeshore. Visitors who trek into the Periyar national park often see a Python and sometimes even a King Cobra.

In the lap of the mountains, the Periyar wildlife sanctuary's environ is like a canvas of many shades. The fresh air of the moist deciduous forest gives one a chance to experience the peace and serenity and long to return for more. Some of the deeper valleys contain tropical evergreen forest with extremely thick tree cover that even bright sunlight finds hard to penetrate. These trees that have grown to amazing heights of up to 130-140 feet seems to having being there forever. The few level areas in the park contain marshy grasslands near the edges of the lake and other water bodies. Spread out across the park are also patches of semi-evergreen forest used as important cover by many of the animal species.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of South India's most popular tourist attractions. British engineers created the picturesque artificial lake at the heart of the sanctuary in 1895 as a way to irrigate nearby districts and provide water to the city of Madurai.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1934 and became a tiger reserve in 1973, it is also known as Thekkady Tiger Reserve, Although the biggest draw to the sanctuary is the 900 or so Indian elephants that roam freely.

Other wildlife found within Periyar includes guar (Indian bison), sambar, wild boar, langur, sloth bear, otters and lion-tailed macaque. Bird watching is another desirable activity with sightings of species such as darters, storks, kingfishers, Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. Other interesting varieties of birds and butterflies have also been spotted.

The mountain scenery, two-hour lake cruises and guided jungle walks make for a memorable visit! The treks allow visitors to come face to face with elephant herds or to observe the wildlife from watchtowers and viewing platforms. The best time to visit Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is from October to June.

Spice plantations surrounding Periyar welcome visitors on organized tours such as the coffee and cardamom plantations of Murikaddy, pepper plantations of Vandiperiyar and several tea factories.

Other Attractions in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Kumily : Situated just 4-kms from Periyar, Kumily is a growing town where tourism is fastly catching up just like the spice trade, the major occupation of this small town. The town is also well equipped with the excellent hotels and resorts for accommodation.

Cradomom Hills : Periyar and Kumily are the most convenient points from which visitors can easily explore Kerala's beautiful Cardamom hills. Guide will approach you at offers of trips via jeep or taxi to the hills and if you can get a group together, these trips work out as a good travel value.

Boat Cruises : Boat cruises make the best option to check out the wilds of Periyar Sanctuary. Today the Periyar lake presents an excellent boating spot for tourists.
